Latest reveal makes shock comparison between Aston Villa and Brentford

The last month has been a struggle for Aston Villa in the Sky Bet Championship, with Steve Bruce’s side failing to build on an impressive start to the season and seeing their automatic promotion hopes take a huge hit during a testing period.

Despite entering December in a strong position, with aspirations of cementing a place in the top-six and even pushing on to challenge the top-two, Villa have been disappointing, suffering from a serious lack of form.

Bruce’s side are without a victory in their last five Championship fixtures, picking up just three points from a possible 15, which has left Villa in eighth, heading into the final game of 2017 three points adrift of the top-six.

Last night’s 2-1 defeat to Brentford was a major disappointment for Bruce, with his side failing to keep the pressure on their rivals, who all picked up a positive result earlier in the day.

Popular bookmaker, bet365, have been reflecting on the result at Griffin Park, highlighting that in Villa’s 18 months in the Championship, they have spent more on transfers than Brentford have in their entire history.

Included in that was Scott Hogan, who made the switch from Brentford to Aston Villa last January for a reported £12m – The Irish striker failed to make a major impact against his former employers.

The Verdict

Aston Villa have spent an eye-watering amount of money since their relegation to the Championship, with very little success.

Just a month ago it looked like Villa would be challenging for the top-six, but a poor run has cast doubt over that.

Bruce faces a key few weeks as he looks to turn things around.
