Jos Luhukay has confirmed that he wants to see Sam Hutchinson and Joost van Aken in action for the under-23 side before he considers them for first-team action at Sheffield Wednesday.

The duo have been long-term absentees at Hillsborough, but are edging closer to a return according the Luhukay, who has revealed that he expects both Hutchinson and van Aken to return in the coming weeks.

The Sheffield Star’s Dom Howson was tweeting updates from Luhukay, who was keen to discuss Hutchinson, who has been back training over the course of the last 10 days.

However, the midfielder has been plagued by injuries so far this season, with Hutchinson featuring on just seven occasions for the Owls.

The last of those appearances came in the final game of 2017, with Luhukay unable to call on the influential midfielder yet during his time at Hillsborough.

Like Hutchinson, van Aken hasn’t been available to Luhukay yet, with the central defender on the sidelines with a hamstring problem since Boxing Day.

Luhukay has confirmed that whilst both players are edging ever closer to a return from their latest setbacks, he wants to see them in action for the under-23 side at Hillsborough before they return to the first-team.

The Verdict

Wednesday injury problems have been the reason they find themselves struggling in the bottom-half of the Championship table.

Luhukay has had a tough introduction to English football, but you’d imagine we will start to see a more competitive team when some of his key men return.

The likes of Hutchinson and van Aken have been a huge miss, particularly with Wednesday now playing with a 3-5-2 formation.
