Leeds United have suffered another injury blow after defender Leif Davis was carried off on a stretcher during an Under-23 clash against Bristol City at Elland Road.

The 19-year-old suffered a knee injury on Sunday afternoon following a collision with Famara Diedhiou in the first half, but the Whites' are yet to put a timeframe on Davis' absence.

This potentially serious injury comes at a bad time for Davis, who was playing for the Under 23s following an impressive first-team performance in the Carabao Cup against Stoke City last week.

Davis' man-of-the-match performance against Nathan Jones' side was the cause of much excitement among Leeds fans, who are expecting the left-back to make his breakthrough at Elland Road this season.

He is one of a number of talented young players that Marcelo Bielsa has at his disposal at Leeds, with the likes of Jamie Shackleton, Mateusz Bogusz and Jack Clarke also pushing for first-team places.

Clarke was one of the major success stories of last season as the academy product made his first-team breakthrough at the age of 18 and was regularly used by Bielsa over the course of the season.

This then saw the talented winger secure a Premier League move to Champions League finalists Tottenham over the summer, but he has been loaned back to Leeds for the duration of this campaign.

Given Bielsa's impressive track record in promoting youth players to the senior set-up, it was felt Davis could make a similar impact to Clarke this campaign if he is able to stay fit.

This is why his injury trouble has come at the worst possible time after his Carabao Cup performance, which suggested he was on the brink of making a sizeable impact for Leeds over the course of a full season.

Leeds can now only hope that Davis' injury is not as serious as first feared, as it would be a real shame for him to lose progress in his so far promising development.

This is particularly the case given that there are few better managers for Davis to learn from than Bielsa, and it is uncertain how much longer the Argentine will be manager at Elland Road beyond this season.

It is a golden period for Leeds in the sense that they have a flourishing academy system with a manager at the helm who is extremely keen to promote youth. It would be a real shame if Davis' injury denies him this opportunity.
