PSG were sent crashing out of the Champions League last night at the hands of Manchester United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer overseeing a memorable comeback victory.

This morning, a lot of the focus has been on Man United’s success, but PSG had led 2-0 heading into the second-leg and an expensively assembled squad should’ve been able to edge past the Premier League side.

However, it wasn’t to be for the French outfit, who again, exited the competition at an early stage and fell short of expectations.

In fact, PSG have never progressed to the final, with @bet365 pointing out that despite spending £1.1 billion on transfers, they’ve never got further in the competition than current Championship side, Leeds United.

Back in the 2000/01 season, Leeds reached the last four of the competition, with David O’Leary’s young side going further than the likes of Barcelona, AC Milan and Man United, who at that time were the dominant force of English football.

Leeds’ run came to an end in Valencia, who went on to lose the final, and now, they are under the management of Marcelo Bielsa in the Sky Bet Championship and looking to get back in the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

The Verdict

Firstly, you’ve got to say that the Leeds squad that reached the semi-finals had its stars and the Whites spent money, albeit not in the billions like PSG.

However, this is an interesting stat and highlights that mega-money doesn’t guarantee you success.

That’s the same whether you’re in the Championship or Champions League.
