Derby County boss Frank Lampard has hailed his side's "special performance" after beating Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, reports the Evening Standard.

The Rams came back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 in the dying embers of the game, however a 93rd minute equaliser from Marouane Fellaini cancelled out Harry Wilson and Jack Marriott's earlier strikes.

But the Rams, who limited United to very few chances throughout the contest, eventually got what they served after winning 8-7 on penalties.

"I think I need time to digest it", Lampard said.

"It was a special performance - to come to Manchester United and not to just nick one, but I think to play the way we played, doing all the things we have been working towards in a short space of time.

"To do it on this stage against this team full of top players with our squad which has some younger boys in it as well, the players were immense - what a night for the club to come here and do that", he added.

It's back to reality on Saturday afternoon for the Rams, as they prepare to build on their 3-1 win against Brentford with a trip to Bolton Wanderers.

The Verdict

Lampard deserves such a lot of credit - his Derby side could have gone to Old Trafford and simply have "parked the bus" - but they didn't, they went there with optimism and confidence, and fair play to them.
