Sunderland recently picked up their first home win in almost a year with victory over Fulham, lifting Chris Coleman’s side out of the relegation zone.

The former Wales boss has installed a new sense of belief at the club, and there now exists a real hope that the Black Cats can avoid the drop under the guidance of the retired defender.

January is a huge month for the club, and new faces are needed if the club are to continue their resurgence.

However the club are penniless, and Coleman will have to sell if he is to buy.

Defender Lamine Kone is likely to be the first out the door, with the Ivorian set to fetch big money on the market.

Coleman must find a replacement for the centre-half however, and should target at least one of this trio when the window opens…

Danny Collins

The 34-year-old defender has strong ties with Coleman having worked with the manager during his long spell as Wales boss, and could do his former gaffer a favour by signing for the Black Cats on loan in the new year.

Collins has pretty much been exiled at West Ham, and with just six months remaining on his deal in East London, may consider dropping into the second tier to gain regular first-team minutes.

The player would slot seamlessly into the back-line at The Stadium of Light, with his inexperience sure to prove invaluable as the club fight off relegation.

Pull this off, and Coleman’s defence will be seriously strengthened.

Jan Kirchhoff

Could Coleman look to follow in the steps of his predecessors and bring the experienced German back to the club?

Kirchhoff did well in a Sunderland shirt, and is yet to sign a deal with a new club following his release from the Black Cats in the summer.

This isn’t a deal that would go through at the start of the window, but if Coleman were to bide his team and Kirchhoff remained a free agent at the end of the window, the player could be a real steal for a bargain price.

Terms until the end of the season could be offered to the German who is certain to be looking to get back into the game, and he may accept reduced monetary terms just to get back on the pitch.

Kirchhoff would make a real difference at his old club.

Martin Cranie

The Huddersfield man was instrumental in the Terriers rise to the Premier League last season, but has yet to play a huge role in the top-flight under David Wagner.

The 31-year-old has bags of experience and a winners mentality following Huddersfield’s playoff final win last year, and would present a huge addition to Coleman’s relegation threatened side.

Experience could be key at the back, and capturing Cranie until the end of the season or on a permanent deal could work wonders at The Stadium of Light.

Cranie could be keen to move after occupying the bench for the majority of the season, and Coleman would be more than happy to welcome the former England U-21 international to the club.
