Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert has suggested that promising midfielder Brett McGavin has impressed him during the last few weeks, and believes that he could be ready to be given more first team involvement.

McGavin started for Ipswich alongside Andre Dozzell and Emyr Huws in midfield, in their FA Cup first round replay at League One rivals Lincoln City on Wednesday night, and the 19-year-old produced an impressive performance during the first hour of the contest, before being taken off with 24 minutes to play, as Lambert's side earned a late 1-0 win.

The 19-year-old will be hoping that his performance against Lincoln is enough to convince Lambert that he is ready to be given more chances in Ipswich's first team throughout the rest of the campaign - and with the likes of Dozzell and Flynn Downes showing that there is space in the side for the Tractor Boys' young prospects McGavin will hoping to follow in their footsteps.

The Paul Lambert Quiz - How much do you know about the Ipswich manager?

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Ipswich's game against Blackpool on Saturday, Lambert suggested that McGavin has demonstrated that he can perform at the level needed to see him challenging for a place in the Tractor Boys' first team, saying: "Brett is doing ok. He's shown me that he can play at this level."

The Verdict

Lambert has shown that he is more than willing to offer chances to the Tractor Boys' promising young talents so far this season, and with McGavin taking his chance by producing a strong performance against Lincoln in midweek it could see him be the latest player to earn the step up to the first team this term.

Given the amount of matches that Ipswich will be playing over the hectic festive period, it is vital that Lambert has as many players to chose from as possible, and McGavin's recent form means that the Ipswich boss has another option to consider in case of injuries and suspensions.

The 19-year-old, as Lambert suggests, has shown that he is ready to make the step up to the first team, and it will be interesting to see how much game time he if given over the next few weeks and months, as the Tractor Boys look to continue their strong start to the campaign.
