Charlton were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties to League Two side Forest Green Rovers after neither side were able to make a breakthrough.

The Addicks had the lion share of both the ball and the chances but failed to convert in 90 minutes as Rovers frustrated them at the Valley.

Naby Sarr earned Charlton their best opportunity to go ahead in the tie as he was brought down midway through the second-half. However, Jake Forster-Caskey’s penalty was excellently saved by Rovers keeper Joe Wollacott.

Wollacott made a number of significant saves to ensure the game went to penalties. Albie Morgan struck the post for Charlton before Shawn McClousky netted the winning spot-kick to set up a second-round tie at Premier League side Bournemouth.

After the start to the season Charlton have had, their supporters will be hoping that this defeat doesn’t knock the sides confidence.
