L2 Round-up: Grimsby, Cambridge, Colchester all involved…

With the fixture released just days away, the new season is going to become very real indeed.

As soon as a club knows who they’re playing, the old season is put to one side and fans can look forward to planning their weekends away and noting the big derby clashes on their own ground.

One side looking forward to renewing acquaintances with an old rival are Grimsby Town. They’ll face Scunthorpe United in the league this season for the first time in 15 years.

We start our round-up of today’s League Two news with a new signing for the Mariners.

James Hanson

Grimsby have tied up the capture of former Sheffield United and Wimbledon striker James Hanson.

The 31-year-old was released from his deal with the Wombles last week, prompting the move to Blundell Park.

He’ll link up with former Mansfield Town man Matt Green in a new-look attack for the Mariners.

Danny Collinge

Colchester have handed a two-year deal to former VFB Stuttgart defender Danny Collinge, as reported by the Gazette and News.

He emerged at MK Dons but went over to Germany and played in their second division for Stuttgart. He returned to the UK last season and spent time with the U’s on a trial basis.

They’ve now moved to add the defender to their ranks on a permanent deal.

Wes Hoolahan

You wouldn’t expect to read the former Norwich and West Brom man’s name on a League Two round-up, but he’s been offered a surprise trial by Cambridge United.

The 37-year-old joined the Baggies last season but left at the end of his contract. He’s now set to train with the League Two side, who finished 88th out of 92 professional teams in England last season.

Freddie Ladapo

Portsmouth have withdrawn their interest in Plymouth striker Freddie Ladapo, as reported by the Portsmouth News.

It was widely reported they were one of two sides close to agreeing on a fee for the 26-year-old, but as they drop out it leaves Sunderland clear to pursue the 18-goal striker.
