West Bromwich Albion missed the chance to return to the top of the Championship table last night, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic.

The Baggies extended their unbeaten run to eleven matches, but needed a goal from Charlie Austin - from a free-kick on the six-yard line - to salvage a point at the DW Stadium.

Wigan dominated the first half and created several scoring chances. They eventually took the lead in fortuitous fashion five minutes after half-time.

Sam Morsy's long-range effort was tipped onto the post by Sam Johnstone - only for the ball to rebound off the Baggies goalkeeper and into the net.

The hosts had chances to kill the game off in the second half, but they were punished when Austin smashed in an equaliser from close range, after a free-kick was awarded inside the penalty area following a back-pass.

The result brings Albion's six-match winning run to an end and means that the Baggies are now second in the Championship table - behind leaders Leeds United on goal difference.

West Brom midfielder Kyle Edwards took to social media earlier today to reflect on the match last night.

With a message on his personal Instagram story, the 21-year-old admitted that it was a tough game, but insisted the team must move forward to their next match against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The Verdict

It was frustrating night for West Brom last night and I'm sure the players will be disappointed that their winning run has come to an end, but there are no easy games in the Championship and the important thing is that they still found away to earn a point.

West Brom have been excellent so far this season, but realistically they can't win every game and the player's will know that.

Edwards is right, the players have now got to move forward and make sure that they bounce back from this result, which means approaching their game against Birmingham at the weekend with the right mindset.
