Wolverhampton Wanderers’ sporting director Kevin Thelwell has already turned their attention to becoming a competitive side in England’s top flight.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were runaway leaders of the Championship, ending the season on 99 points, nine points ahead of runners-up Cardiff City, and securing a spot in the Premier League next season.

In an interview on the Wolves website, Thelwell stated: “We need to make sure that we’re capable of not only playing in the Premier League, but achieving something in the Premier League, that’s the vision to become a strong Premier League outfit.

“We want to be a strong Premier League contender which is actively playing in the top half of the league. The hard work has already started, it’s going to be a long summer but one we’re looking forward to.

“What we’re gearing up for is to try and create a squad that matches the ambitions of our coaching team, players and Fosun. Their vision is to be a top Premier League team so we have to produce and we’re relishing that challenge.”

The Verdict

For the first time in a long time, a newly promoted side won’t be going into the Premier League season as relegation favourites.

While Cardiff City might be, Nuno Spirito Santo and his team have what it takes to be long stayers in England’s top flight. With the addition of a few summer signings, Thelwell’s visions of achieving something special could just come true.

Certainly, he's delivering comments that will see many fans excited ahead of the new campaign and it remains to be seen how they convert their ambitions into signings in the summer.
