Swindon Town are reportedly eyeing a move for Wigan Athletic boss John Sheridan as their new manager according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Robins have been without a manager since Richie Wellens opted to move to League Two side Salford City, in a move which came as a surprise to the club's supporters.

Swindon have endured a frustrating season so far in League One, as they're currently sat 20th in the third-tier standings after winning promotion from League Two last term.

Noel Hunt is currently in charge of the first-team, but hasn't managed to turn around their poor run of form at this moment in time.

Sheridan could be the manager to take charge at the County Ground in the near future it seems, with the 56-year-old currently in charge of fellow League One strugglers Wigan Athletic.

The Latics have had their fair share of off-the-field problems recently though, with Sheridan only being on a short-term contract at the DW Stadium.

Swindon Town are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on Shrewsbury Town, in what is likely to be a tricky test once again for the Robins.

The Verdict:

This could be a decent appointment by Swindon.

Sheridan is having to deal with tough circumstances at Wigan Athletic with their off-the-field situation, so you would imagine that he could be tempted by a move elsewhere in the near future.

Swindon lost their last manager to a League Two side, which will have been hugely frustrating, and I think they need to appoint a new boss at the earliest of opportunities to force themselves up the third-tier standings.

I think appointing Sheridan would be a smart move by the Robins, and a step in the right direction.
