West Brom chief executive Mark Jenkins has confirmed he will take a 100% pay cut and other influential figures at The Hawthorns will also accept a deduction as the club deal with the Coronavirus outbreak.

The football world has come to a halt in the past month and the lack of games have presented clubs up and down the country with a real financial problem, with Liverpool becoming the latest club to furlough staff.

Albion haven't done that yet, but it is a cause for concern, and Jenkins confirmed that he will be sacrificing his salary until the crisis is over when speaking to the club's official site.

"Our operations are almost completely closed down and we are receiving virtually no income. Almost all of the Club’s usual costs still need to be paid, the majority of which are wages whether this be admin staff, maintenance teams, management or, of course, the first-team players.

"With that in mind, I think it is only correct that for the duration of this lockdown I take a 100 per cent cut in my salary and other members of the senior management team have also offered to take significant reductions in their remuneration."

Jenkins didn't rule out the possibility of furloughing staff in the future, which would see the government pay 80% of their wages but he confirmed the club would make up the remaining 20% to ensure staff don't lose out.

The verdict

This is a remarkable gesture from Jenkins and he deserves all the praise that will come his way for taking such action.

Of course, he is in a well-paid role but it is still a great thing for him to do and it's something that will help the club out a lot at this tough time.

Staff will also be pleased to hear that they will still receive all their wages if the club to decide to furlough them in the future.
