Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet is willing to sell the club for a fee of £60million, a report from The Sun has claimed.

It is thought that the Belgian will sell the club if that valuation - which has increased in recent months - is met, which would bring an end to his controversial time at The Valley.

According to the latest reports, representatives from Charlton could soon be set to travel to the USA for talks with an American consortium over a deal for the club.

Meanwhile, another group which has apparently been receiving insight from the club's former scout Paul Senior are also said to be looking to secure funds for a potential bid for the club.

Duchalet completed a full takeover of the Addicks in January 2014, with the club suffering relegation from the Championship at the end of 2015/16 campaign, amidst a string of continuing protests against the owner.

After three years in League One, Charlton secured their return to the Championship via the play-offs at the end of last season, with the Addicks currently 13th in the second-tier standings after 17 games of the league campaign under manager Lee Bowyer.

The report also claims that while Bowyer wants to remain at The Valley long term, that could be impacted if Charlton are taken over by a new consortium with their own plans for the club.

The Verdict

It feels like there could be mixed emotions for Charlton fans here.

On the one hand, the fact that the asking price Duchatelet is demanding for the club has increased - possibly making a sale less likely - is possibly a source of frustration, given their apparent desire to see the Belgian leave the club.

The fact therefore that there still appears to be some interest from a number of groups in buying the club does at least offer some encouragement for them.

That however, may be tempered by the apparent uncertainty around the future of Bowyer, who they will surely want to remain at The Valley, given what he has done for the club in getting them out of League One and seemingly re-establishing the Addicks in the Championship.
