Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory will not be leaving the club during the current transfer window, according to a report from Yorkshire Live.

A report from BBC Sheffield (as cited by The Sheffield Star) earlier this month suggested that Gregory was attracting interest from two Championship sides and a League One team.

However, instead of sealing a move away from Hillsborough, the striker is now expected to stay at the club for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

Gregory's contract is set to expire following the conclusion of the current term.

Yet to agree to fresh terms, the striker is on course to become a free-agent this summer.

While the January window represented an opportunity for Wednesday to seal a fee for the 34-year-old, they have opted instead to retain his services.

After scoring 17 goals for the Owls in League One in the previous term, Gregory would have been hoping to set this division alight with his attacking displays again this season.

However, the striker has unfortunately struggled with his consistency as he has only managed to find the back of the net on four occasions in the 22 league games that he has participated in.

Gregory will be determined to produce an eye-catching performance against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday if he is selected to feature in this fixture by manager Darren Moore.

The Verdict

Whereas the Owls could have potentially secured a reasonable amount of money for Gregory today, they may have struggled to draft in a sufficient replacement for him in such a short period of time.

Taking this into consideration, it could be argued that they have made the right call regarding the striker's immediate future.

Having provided 77 direct goal contributions in League One during his career, Gregory will be confident in his ability to recapture his best form over the course of the coming weeks.

By helping Wednesday secure automatic promotion to the Championship later this year by scoring on a regular basis, the forward may be able to convince Moore to extend his stay at Hillsborough for another season.
