Key Sunderland man sends strong message as attention turns to weekend clash with Charlton Athletic

Sunderland will be delighted with their Easter weekend results.

The Black Cats went into the Bank Holiday in a strong position as they look to secure promotion to the Championship but there was no escaping the fact that they had some significant hurdles to jump first.

Oxford United provided a stern test on Good Friday, but the Easter Monday contest with Peterborough United was tipped as one of the biggest matches of the season so far.

Sunderland knew that defeat to the Posh would be a massive blow in the promotion race, while victory would see them move into an extremely strong position in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot.

In the end the Black Cats had to battle hard to secure a 1-1 draw with Aiden McGeady’s free-kick ensuring that Lee Johnson’s side came away with a positive result on a potentially pivotal afternoon in the League One season.

Conditions were tough with heavy winds and an even heavier pitch making it hard to play, but taking to social media after the game Jordan Jones was quick to praise his teammates for their performance before turning their attention to Saturday’s clash with Charlton Athletic.

Taking to Twitter, Jones said: “Good point for the lads on a tough pitch. Full focus on Saturday now.”

The verdict

While the result over Peterborough United was a huge one, there’s no time for patting themselves on the back.

The contest with Charlton Athletic this weekend is another massive test and one that Sunderland need to ensure that they’re ready for.

They need points to keep the pace in the promotion race and so Lee Johnson must ensure that the team are ready.
