Key Sunderland figure delivers promotion message as attention turns to crucial Hull City clash

Max Power has urged his Sunderland teammates to secure victory over Hull City in order to get their season back on track.

The Black Cats have endured a torrid week or so in the automatic promotion race after enjoying a wonderful start to 2021 so far.

A positive run of results saw the club move into contention to go up automatically, however three defeats in their last three games mean that they’re now eight points behind the top two.

Sunderland do take on League One leaders Hull City on Tuesday evening, but while a top two finish can’t be mathematically ruled out, Power believes that the focus has to be on getting back to winning ways with a view to the play-offs.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Power said: “That’s why it’s important that we find that winning formula again.

“We’ve not become a bad side overnight and I think if you look at the three games it’s moments in games.

“A lot will be made of what’s gone on and rightly so. There will be anger, there will be a sadness of what may have been, but for me now it’s important that we try and rally the squad.

“I think what’s important now is that we need to get a result as quickly as possible, in terms of setting it up for the end of the season.

“It doesn’t take a genius to work out now it’s going to be real difficult to get automatic. That’s not me being negative, that’s me being realistic and what’s important now is that we try and get our performances ready to end the season and see what comes.”

The verdict

Sunderland need to stop the rot, plain and simple.

Things haven’t gone well in the last few matches but with so much still to play for there’s no time for licking their wounds.

With the play-offs not far away it’s time for the club to build some momentum and prepare for a pivotal few weeks.
