Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill has confirmed that he wants Tyrese Campbell to commit his future to the Potters, following the forward’s recent impact in their win against Huddersfield Town.

Campbell was brought into the side for a rare start under O’Neill for the Potters’ trip to Huddersfield on New Year’s Day, with the 20-year-old starting on the right-hand side in place of Tom Ince - and he made a real difference in the final third combining well with Sam Vokes and scoring twice to help Stoke to a 5-2 win.

The forward had found himself behind the likes of Lee Gregory, Vokes, Scott Hogan and Mame Biram Diouf in the striking pecking order since O’Neill tool over from Nathan Jones, which has seen him linked with a potential move to Rangers and Celtic this month.

With his contract up in the summer, the Potters face battle to keep hold of the player but O'Neill told Stoke-On-Trent Live that he wants the forward to stay.

Do you know where these 15 ex-Stoke City players are playing now?

"We would like him to stay here at Stoke and play and develop here. So that’s an on-going situation we will deal with, but we should just make sure that the boy’s focused on playing his football, and playing well, as he’s certainly showed what he’s capable of."

The Verdict

Campbell would have been concerned with his lack of involvement under O’Neill during the Northern Irishman’s first few games in charge of the club, but he deserves credit for keeping himself fit and ready to come into the side and make an impression when called upon.

The 20-year-old demonstrated to O’Neill that he has the ability to be a real threat for the Potters in one of the wide positions in Stoke’s front three, with his ability to come inside and add goals to the side a potentially key weapon for the Potters over the second half of the campaign.

Stoke will now be keen to keep hold of Campbell this month but his long-term future is still up in the air.
