Shrewsbury have released a statement from their CEO, Brian Caldwell detailing the progress on safe standing at the stadium.

Shrewsbury are intending to bring safe standing to their stadium Montgomery Waters Meadow along with other lower league clubs as the idea grows in popularity.

The connection with infamous incidents such as the Hillsborough disaster, the Heysel disaster and the Ibrox disaster started the shift away from standing seating due to the dangers it posed because of the sheer amount of people in a relatively small space.

However, Borussia Dortmund's 'yellow wall' in Germany and Celtic's implementation of safe standing have shown that the positive effects of it if it is implemented correctly.

Caldwell stated: "The advice they were given was that the units are practically finished and that they will be back in touch with them in the next couple of weeks with regards to shipping dates to get the units back over here".

Although it appears as if they were supposed to be done earlier, but the delay has actually helped the club: "I think at one point I said that it might have been February, but when would we have fitted in the installation in February with all these games? It’s probably been a bit of a godsend that the units haven’t been finished in that time scale".

The Verdict

Having standing areas in stadiums certainly improves the atmosphere, which is an issue that some clubs are struggling to find a solution for.

It could also make the club unique in the short-term, which could bring in bigger attendances and generate more revenue for the club.

Therefore it's a major positive for the club as long as it is implemented and maintained with safety being the chief focus.
