Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson has claimed he would love to sign a new deal and extend his stay at the club.

The 30-year-old’s current deal at Hillsborough is set to expire this summer.

Hutchinson joined on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2014 and has gone on to make 137 appearances for the Owls.

Is this the WORST Sheffield Wednesday XI from the last 10 years? Let us know what YOU think...

He has been an integral figure this season, starting in every Championship game so far and even adding one goal and one assist from holding midfield.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Hutchinson revealed that negotiations had not yet been opened over a new contract but he that he was hoping to stay at the Yorkshire club.

He said: “If I am wanted, I would love to stay here. But if I am not, that's football at the end of the day.

“Everyone knows that I love the club and I am settled here but it is up to the club if they want me.

“If they speak to me (about a contract), I will sign one.”

The versatile midfielder indicated that he was loving being a regular feature in the Owls starting XI.

He said: "It has probably been the best because I have played every minute.

"I have not missed a training session. I am happy with how I am doing. I am probably as fit as I ever have been.

“There is always stuff you can improve on. Look, my career is up and down and it has always been. But I feel good in my body and mind so I am happy.”

Wednesday are currently ninth in the league and face Fulham on Saturday, which will be new manager Garry Monk’s second game in charge.

The Verdict

This should be a huge boost for Wednesday fans. Hutchinson has been a key player this season and his comments suggest he is really happy at the club and sees his future there.

He has been a really solid performer both with and without the ball for the Owls this season. According to Wyscout, Hutchinson averages the second-most tackles per game in the squad, 2.1, and the most interceptions per game, 2.3, and also averages the second-most passes per game, 45.4, at an impressive pass success rate of 84.9%.

You would imagine the club will be looking to extend the 30-year-old’s contract but given his age, it will be interesting to see what sort of deal they give him.
