Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri revealed that he appointed Garry Monk as manager because of his impressive CV and determination to prove himself.

The 40-year-old has been out of work since he was surprisingly sacked by Birmingham City in June after doing a good job under tough circumstances at St. Andrew's.

And, the Owls confirmed earlier today that Monk has succeeded Steve Bruce in taking charge at Hillsborough.

Speaking to reporter Leon Wobschall at the unveiling of the new boss, Chansiri outlined exactly why he moved for Monk - who is managing his fourth Championship club in just two-and-a-half years after spells with Leeds and Middlesbrough before Blues.

"I looked at Garry's CV and he did very well at Birmingham. He is a hungry manager."

Monk has had a mixed time of things at his former clubs, with a tough six months at Middlesbrough sandwiched between more successful periods at Leeds and Birmingham.

He will now be gearing up for his first game as Wednesday boss which comes against Huddersfield in nine days time.

The Verdict

There's no doubt that Monk's CV is pretty impressive. He took Leeds from a mid-table side to play-off challengers and he did extremely well to keep Birmingham up in what was a very challenging situation given the off-the-field issues.

His time on Teesside won't be remembered fondly but even then he will still feel things would've improved in time.

Ultimately though, it seems a smart move by Chansiri on paper and it's now down to Monk to deliver with what is a decent squad at Hillsborough.
