After successive defeats since the October international break that have made it one win in six, the pressure is really mounting on Carlos Carvalhal.

His Sheffield Wednesday side host Barnsley this weekend, with fans demanding a performance.

Despite the calls from some sections of the support for the Portuguese boss to go, he still appears to have the backing of the one man that matters most – owner Dejphon Chansiri.

The Sheffield Star report how he told fans at last night's Steering Group meeting; “I still support Carlos 100 per cent. We have a good team and I believe in them but we are not playing consistently. On the pitch, it depends on the players. Carlos' job is to make them more consistent.”

However, the ex-Besiktas boss will be very aware that things can change quickly and a bad result against their Yorkshire rivals this weekend will only increase the pressure.

Chansiri also revealed that he held a lengthy meeting with the players before training yesterday, but he had no doubts about their attitude. “The players are human beings. We know how ambitious they are. The players want to play in the Premier League. When they lose, they get upset.”

The Verdict

This will be pleasing for Carlos Carvalhal to hear, although as mentioned, only improved results will guarantee his position.

It's good of Chansiri to speak out, given the speculation and rumours that have persisted over the past few weeks.

This will settle things down until the Barnsley game, but that is huge for the manager. The owner rightly expects a promotion push and it's looking a long way off at the minute.
