Luke Freeman is edging closer to a move to Sheffield Untied, with Football Insider suggesting he is set to sign a three-year deal.

The outlet also report that the playmaker completed a medical today, after the clubs agreed a fee believed to be in the region of £5m.

The contract offered to the 27-year-old also includes the further option of a year, which means he could be The Blades for the long-term, regardless of which division they're in.

It is a blow for QPR, Freeman has been their key creative outlet for more than two years, and in total has scored 16 goals and made 25 assists for The R's.

Despite the disappointment, £5m is a substantial amount for QPR considering their predicament, and their budget cutbacks in recent years. It should allow them to spend well on a replacement, whether that is a loan or a permanent transfer, as well as improving other areas of the squad.

QPR have now made six signings this summer as Mark Warburton looks to rebuild the squad in his style, but he could find it difficult to replace someone of Freeman's quality.

The Verdict

This transfer has looked likely to happen for quite a while now, so it will come as no surprise to QPR fans that it finally looks like it will be completed.

The positive for R's fans is that the £5m rumoured fee is considerably higher than what was previously reported, and it should allow them to strengthen in multiple areas, if chairman Amit Bhatia allows Warburton use of the funds.
