Preston have endured a dismal start to the season with Alex Neil's side in the relegation places after their opening 12 league matches.

The Lilywhites were considered as potential dark horses for promotion this season in the eyes of many, but they have evidently struggled for a good run of form.

Alex Neil's side ended a run of ten league games without a win at the weekend, and they did it in emphatic fashion as they thrashed Wigan 4-0 at Deepdale.

Speaking to the club's official website, the Preston boss felt that the win over Wigan could prove to be a turning point in their season.

"Last year’s game was a key turning point and you do get those during the season and I felt after the Wigan game, that felt like a turning point for us – the way the lads responded and the way the crowd responded, but we need to follow that up and back that up."

The former Norwich City boss was also full of praise for the Preston supporters, who he described as 'fantastic' and Neil hopes to repay their support this weekend with a positive result when they travel to Hull City.

"Our away fans are fantastic; they come and are in good voice wherever we go. We haven’t given them that much to shout about this year, so let’s hope we can build on the victory from the last game."

Neil's side travel to Hull City who are also struggling this season and are rooted to the bottom of the Championship table. Preston should be aiming to move up the table in the near future, with a run of 'easier' matches to come for Alex Neil's side.

The Verdict

The win over Wigan was an impressive result, and with Preston's next run of games, they should really be hoping that it can kick-start their season.

With games against Hull, Rotherham and Ipswich to come in the next month for Neil's team, they every reason to believe that they can start to push themselves up the Championship table.

If they can recapture some of last season's excellent form then they will be in the top-half of the table by Christmas and they can then focus on a potential play-off push.
