Andy Rhodes is on the verge of departing Sheffield Wednesday, with the goalkeeping coach set to join Oldham Athletic.

The 53-year-old has a wealth of experience and has been at Hillsborough since 2010, helping to play a crucial role in Wednesday’s recent success in the Sky Bet Championship.

A report in the Sheffield Star has confirmed that Rhodes is on the verge of joining Oldham Athletic, where he looks set to link up with the League Two outfit and become Frankie Bunn’s assistant manager.

Rhodes, who is the father of Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes, could conclude his move to Oldham next week.

The 53-year-old has a wealth of experience, and during his time at Hillsborough, he has been an influential figure, outlasting five different managers in South Yorkshire.

Rhodes has been key to putting three ultra-competitive goalkeepers in place at Hillsborough, with Wednesday boasting some of the best goalkeeping options in the Championship.

Keiren Westwood is Wednesday’s experienced No.1, but injuries plagued his 2017/18 campaign, with Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson both stepping up into the first-team and impressing under Carlos Carvalhal and Jos Luhukay.

The Verdict

Goalkeeping coaches move on all over the country, but it is hard to deny that this is a blow for Sheffield Wednesday.

Rhodes has been a consistent figure at Hillsborough over recent years, with the 53-year-old helping produce some exceptional goalkeepers.

The three available to Luhukay now are excellent, with all three capable of starting next season as first choice.

Losing their mentor and coach is a mammoth blow.
