Leeds United captain Liam Cooper stepped up to the plate at the weekend, netting the header that earned the club their first win of 2018 on Saturday.
Cooper’s header just past the hour mark was the only goal of the game as the Whites saw off play-off rivals Brentford at Elland Road to record their first victory since Boxing Day.
The triumph was also Paul Heckingbottom’s maiden win as Leeds boss, at the fourth time of asking, and moves the club to within five points of the final play-off spot.
Cooper gave his thoughts on the victory and what it means for the rest of the season to the club’s official website, after he and his team-mates finally got the monkey off their back.
He said: “I don’t get many myself, but when I do, they are always nice to score, even if the knee slide didn’t go to plan! It is a big result for the boys.
“We have been knocking at the door and we have now managed to get over the line today and get the three points which is massive. Hopefully now, this will give us a big boost going into the final stages of the season.
“The fans always keep spirits high. I come in for a bit of stick sometimes from the fans, but I will always give my best for the club and that is all I can do.”
Captain Cooper has rightly come in for some criticism from Leeds fans this season and he has sometimes failed to show the leadership qualities required.
He did step up at the weekend and Leeds fans will need similar character from him and his team-mates between now and the end of the season if they are to make an unlikely charge for the play-offs.
They need to string together a run of victories and long-term, the clean sheet Leeds picked up at the weekend is something they need more of.
