It's safe to say that Marcelo Bielsa has certainly endeared himself to the Elland Road faithful, as Leeds United edge closer to a long-awaited promotion into the Premier League.

The Whites are currently sat top of the Championship table, and are seven points clear of third-placed Fulham with just nine games still to play in this year's campaign.

A significant amount of credit has to go to Bielsa, who has transformed the club from top to bottom, and has taken a group of players that had previously struggled, to within touching distance of football in the top-flight.

Speaking in an interview on Sky Sports' 'The Football Show', Leeds' managing director Angus Kinnear admitted that Bielsa was targeted by Victor Orta whilst the club carried out their search for a new manager in the summer of 2018.

"It was really the brainchild of our director of football, Victor Orta.

"He was asked by our owner, Andrea Radrizzani: "If you could appoint anybody in the world, who would he appoint?" When he said the name, I have to say I smiled to myself. But our owner is nothing if not lacking ambition."

Kinnear went on to reveal how talks with Bielsa took place in the first place, and stated that the Argentine had already done his research on the club before talks got underway.

"When we went to Buenos Aires to speak to Marcelo, I thought we were going to have to do a really big sell in terms of the potential, the project and what Leeds United could become and the part he could play. But, in fact, he'd done his research and he was already committed to the cause.

"We actually spent the 24 hours in Buenos Aires just talking about the players and the systems and how he wanted to play. I left knowing he was going to be the manager of Leeds but not actually having the contract that I went over with to get signed."

Kinnear labelled Bielsa as an 'amazing coach', and issued high-praise for the Leeds boss, who has transformed the club for all the right reasons on and off the pitch.

"I started my football career at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger and he had a philosophy that really touched every part of the club and Marcelo has been the same. He's not just a coach. He's an amazing coach and he's brought a group of players who finished mid-table the season before he joined and it's effectively the same group of players that are now top of the league.

"But actually his influence has extended across the club as a whole. He set new standards, he set a new philosophy and that's really touched every part of the club."

The Verdict:

He's been brilliant with a group of players that have previously struggled to reach their potential.

Bielsa's high-intensity style of football has worked wonders for Leeds United, and they fully deserve to win promotion into the Premier League this season.

They've been the team to beat for much of this year's campaign, and I think that Bielsa will be a manager in demand in future seasons.

The Elland Road faithful should enjoy the good times whilst he's still in charge, as he is more than capable of achieving great things with Leeds in the Premier League.
