Ipswich Town caretaker manager Bryan Klug says the sacking of Paul Hurst yesterday was a shock, as per the club's official Twitter account

Hurst was relieved of his duties after the Tractor Boys' 2-0 loss to Leeds United on Wednesday night which left them bottom of the table and three points adrift of safety.

"This isn’t a club that would make this decision lightly," Klug told his pre-match press conference.

"So yesterday was a shock. Everything the could have gone wrong seemed to go wrong for Paul.

"He didn’t get the luck you need as a manager."

Hurst took over the reigns at Portman Road in the summer after guiding Shrewsbury Town to a shock play-off final, eventually losing to Rotherham United at Wembley.

He brought in 12 new faces during the summer but has struggled badly to string a run of results together.

The Suffolk club have picked up just one win all season, losing seven and drawing six which has been deemed not good enough by club owner Marcus Evans.

Former Stoke City and Norwich City manager Paul Lambert is apparently set to take over the role after the weekend, with the East Anglian Daily Times reporting he will be announced as Hurst's successor on Monday.

The verdict

Despite Ipswich's poor results of late Hurst's sacking was certainly a surprise.

Klug is right that he did not get any luck as manager, nor did he get enough time.

Marcus Evans knew that Hurst was not as experienced as other options, so why hire him if you are not able to give him time to adapt to a league he has never managed in?
