Hull City defender Jordy de Wijs is reportedly optimistic about signing a new deal at the club, having opened talks over a contract extension.

The Dutchman's current contract is set to expire in 2021 and though the club have a 12-month option on top of that, it is understood that the Tigers are keen to secure his long-term future at the KCOM Stadium by offering him improved terms.

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Grant McCann's side this season–starting all but one of their Championship games and leading the squad in average aerial duels won, interceptions and clearances, according to Whoscored.

Understandably, it seems the Tigers are keen to keep De Wijs at the club and, speaking to The Hull Daily Mail, it seems the feeling's mutual.

Asked about a potential new deal on improved terms, the defender said: "That’s true. We are talking with each other about what the best options are, about years (length of contract) and stuff.

“I don’t want to say too much about it but we will see. I am really happy so hopefully, everything will go well.”

The centre-back arrived at the KCOM Stadium last summer and has made 47 appearances for the Tigers in total.

His recent performances have been a contributing factor to McCann's side's recent turn around in form.

Hull have won three of their last four in the Championship and will be confident of picking up another victory against struggling Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The Verdict

Outside Jarrod Bowen, De Wijs has been arguably Hull's best player this season, so these comments should be music to the ears of fans of the Yorkshire club.

If he stays fit, you'd imagine the 24-year-old will play an important role in the Tigers season–especially if they are looking to climb up into the top six.

With three wins in their last four, Hull seem to have found their feet under McCann and will surely be eyeing up a late-season push for the play-offs.
