Huddersfield Town's new chief executive Mark Devlin has issued a warning to the rest of the Terriers hierarchy not to be over ambitious this January window.

Town currently sit 20th in the Championship table, just four points off the relegation zone following potentially damaging defeats against Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Barnsley.

Devlin was only appointed by the club three days ago but has already suggested the club should take guard against making snap decisions this transfer window.

Town have already seen the arrivals of Emile Smith Rowe and Richard Stearman this window and are keen to add more players through the doors over the next two weeks.

Speaking to the BBC Radio Leeds on Tuesday, Devlin warned: "Everyone has to be very careful in the January transfer window, you can over pay, over spend and make rash decisions if they are not well thought through.

"You can over pay, over spend and make rash decisions if they are not well thought through," Devlin continued. "You can also make panic buys because the end of the season is only two or three months away."

Warning of making rash decisions, Devlin added: "I think every club can probably show you an instance where they have made some rash decisions in January, we just have to be strong."

Leicester City midfielder Andy King is set to have a medical with the Terriers later today, and if all is well, would become Town's third signing in the space of a week.

The Verdict

Devlin does make some very valid points about being cautious over the club's January recruitment and in some cases all clubs should approach any window with caution.

However, based on Town's activity so far in the transfer window and the imminent arrival of Andy King, I see no reason for Town fans or the hierarchy to be worried just yet.

Smith Rowe, Stearman, and potentially King, all represent transfers that certainly make sense given the predicament the club are in, in the league table.

If Town want to pull away from the relegation zone they must strengthen their side, and from what we've seen so far an air of sensibility is being taken.
