Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson has thrown his support behind the club's manager Jan Siewert as the Terriers prepare for life back in the Championship, report the Yorkshire Post.

So far, the German has won just one match during his tenure at the John Smith's but the club's new chairman is adamant that he has what it takes to be a success in Yorkshire.

“We get on great and our thought process is very, very similar and it was just a no-brainer," Hodgkinson said.

"There is nothing in the appointment that concerns me. Seeing him out on the training pitch only reinforces that.

“He is respected and the players listen to him and take on board what he is saying. He is really good with the players.

“He does not take any messing, but does it in the right way. He is a strong character and that is what the football club needs."

Siewert took over from David Wagner at the club midway through last season with relegation looking like an inevitability.

He won just one of his first 15 matches in charge and, as a result, has wasted no time putting his mark on his side during the current transfer window.

So far three new faces have arrived in the form of Forest Green midfielder Reece Brown, Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick and Leyton Orient striker Josh Koroma.

The Terriers welcome Derby County on the opening day of the season in what will undoubtedly be a stern test of their promotion credentials.

The verdict

I totally agree with Hodgkinson and think Siewert will do a decent job with Huddersfield.

I think the doubts that have emerged over his credentials are rather harsh given the situation in which he took over. Any manager in the world would have struggled in that scenario.

But he has clearly identified where the weaknesses lie in the squad and has moved quickly and shrewdly to address them this summer.
