Huddersfield Town’s head of football operations David Webb has revealed that Danny and Nicky Cowley were always the club’s first choice to take charge at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Danny Cowley was appointed as the Terriers' new manager yesterday, with his brother Nicky joining as his assistant manager.

Jan Siewert was sacked by the Yorkshire club in mid-August, with Mark Hudson stepping into the role of caretaker manager.

Hudson had said he wanted the job full time, while there were links to Nigel Adkins and Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer.

Speaking in the first press conference since appointing the new management team, Webb explained the club’s method for selecting their new boss.

According to the club’s official Twitter account, he said: “We identified key components we wanted for our new manager.

“There were four or five people on our shortlist, but Danny and Nicky were always number one.

“They represent Huddersfield Town values.”

The duo did a monumental job with their previous club Lincoln City.

The Cowleys led the Imps from the National League to League One, reached an FA Cup quarter-final as a non-league side, and won the Checkatrade Trophy in 2018.

They arrive with Huddersfield one place off the bottom of the Championship, with just one point from six games.

The Verdict

This looks like it could be a really exciting appointment by Huddersfield but after an abysmal start to the season, the Cowleys look like they have their work cut out for them.

What the pair did at Lincoln was nothing short of sensational and Terriers fans will no doubt hope they can have a similar impact on their club.

The focus, first of all, will be Championship survival and prior to that, Sunday’s clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday have also hired a new manager, Garry Monk, in the international break, so this should be a really interesting game.
