Kalvin Phillips has a release clause inserted inside his new contract at Leeds United, according to reports from Football Insider.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Elland Road on Monday afternoon, after becoming the subject of serious transfer interest from the likes of Aston Villa and Wolves in the summer.

It is believed that Leeds rejected bids in the region of around £20m for the midfielder's services in the summer, and has since shown commitment to the Whites by penning a new long-term deal at Elland Road.

But according to Football Insider, Phillips now has a buy-out clause in his contract, which is claimed to be between £20m and £25m. If activated, clubs would be able to negotiate personal terms with the midfielder straight away.

It is claimed by Football Insider that it was Phillips' representatives who insisted upon the clause, with Premier League interest intensifying.

Wolves will reportedly keep tabs on the holding midfielder throughout the course of the season, keeping a close eye on whether Leeds win promotion to the top-flight or not.

Marcelo Bielsa's side travel to Barnsley this weekend, hoping to get back to winning ways in the Sky Bet Championship.

The Verdict

It's obviously a massive relief for Leeds fans to have tied Phillips down to a new deal - signing for five more years shows real commitment and desire to the club.

If there is a release clause in his contract, though, then Leeds are somewhat skating on thin ice, as £20-25m is hardly a lot of money to Wolves in this day and age.

A lot is riding on whether Leeds reach the Premier League anytime soon, and his new deal makes promotion even more important.
