Derby County's Richard Keogh has revealed that he is glad to see Martin O'Neill back in football - even though he has joined arch-rivals Nottingham Forest.

The Reds announced earlier in the week that the 66-year-old had succeeded Aitor Karanka at the City Ground.

And, the centre-back, who was a regular under O'Neill for the Irish national team, told Derbyshire Live the qualities that he has.

"He's a great guy and I'm pleased he's back in football - even though it's obviously against us. I know what he's like. He's a winner."

As well as that, the 32-year-old revealed that he has spoken to his old boss and wished him well, apart from when the East Midlands rivals meet!

"I spoke to him and said: 'Good luck... but obviously not when you play us. It's quite clear the bond he's got with that club and I hope it goes alright for him - but not better than us!"

The Rams are four points ahead of Forest as we appraoch a crucial period of the season, with both sides targeting promotion.

O'Neill's first game in charge is against Bristol City at home today, whilst Keogh is sure to start as Frank Lampard's men welcome Reading.

The Verdict

Keogh clearly has a lot of respect for O'Neill and it's understandable as he played a big part for the manager when he was in charge of Ireland.

That means he has a real insight into how he works and he recognises the quality the experienced boss has.

But, his focus will now be on finishing above his old manager in what could be a tight race for the play-offs!
