Key Derby County figure issues honest assessment of the club’s young talent

Derby County’s first team coach, Liam Rosenior has stated that the experience that the Derby County youngsters are currently getting will ‘stand them in good stead’ in the future.

There have been signs of encouragement for the youth players at Derby this season after manager, Phillip Cocu, continues to give them a chance in the senior squad.

Since the season started, academy products, Lee Buchanan, Jason Knight, Louie Sibley and Morgan Whittaker have all been handed their first-team debuts with all four of them receiving international call-ups to their various youth sides recently.

The youngsters will be hoping to change the Rams’ early season fortunes around, as Cocu’s side currently sit in 19th place in the Championship having won just once in the league so far.

Speaking to RamsTV, Rosenior said: “I can see the process and the way of working. We’ve seen a lot of debuts for our young players coming through for players such as Jason Knight, Lee Buchanan, Morgan Whittaker and Louie Sibley already so far this season.

“They have all done really, really well since coming into the team in different moments in the two cup games and also in the league in Jason and Lee’s case too.

“It was disappointing to lose to a local rival in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup but, at the same time, as a coaching staff and as a club, we want to give our young players a chance. And that’s not just to be good for the next two weeks, but to have fantastic careers over the next few years.

“Playing in a local derby match at that age, for players like Louie at 17 and Morgan at 18, that will have been an unbelievable experience for them and is going to stand them in such good stead in the future.”

The Verdict

Rosenior is spot on. What an experience it has been for them since Cocu came in to replace Frank Lampard.

Playing in a local rivalry against Nottingham Forest, despite the defeat, would have been a brilliant learning curve for every single youngster that played on that night.

It’ll be interesting to see how Cocu utilises the youth players if their more experienced members of the squad continue to under-perform.
