Blackburn Rovers have held a board meeting, with the club's plans for the January transfer window on the agenda, chief executive Steve Waggot has confirmed.

The Ewood Park club are currently ninth in the Championship standings, just one point off the play-offs, and funds are expected to be made available in January as they look to force their way into the top six in the second half of the campaign.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph about their plans for January, Waggot revealed: “We set a budget in the summer when we went to India. Tony went across a few weeks ago for the owners to meet Mark Venus and hear about the developments at the training ground.

“We’ve just got the global Financial Director, Gandhi Babu, across for a board meeting that happened on Tuesday.

“We will look at what we do in January. We have quite a big squad if you look at the numbers and players who aren’t getting minutes."

Explaining the dilemma Rovers face with regards to some of their current fringe first-team players, Waggot pointed out the situation 20-year-old midfielder John Buckley currently finds himself in: “If you take John Buckley, a great talent, but with how the team is performing, is travelling with the team but can’t get in.

"You watch the Under-23s against Leicester and he’s down in Bristol (with the first-team last weekend) and there are a lot of players to look after.”

Tony Mowbray also spoke about the possibility of the club doing business in January, with the Blackburn manager seemingly reluctant to guarantee any new signings in the coming weeks, as he continued: “People will ask what are we doing in January? We might sign some players, but they might not get in the team because they don’t know how we play, what to do in certain situations.

“They have to integrate into the football and that’s been the case for a few players. We’re trying to teach the players when to play, when to be calm, when to be aggressive, when to sit off and let them have at the back and see if they can play through us, teach them football."

Following a run of six games unbeaten to put themselves back in contention for the play-off places, Blackburn begin their busy Christmas and New Year schedule on Monday night, when they host Wigan at Ewood Park.

The Verdict

These are some interesting comments for Blackburn fans to read.

While the recent run they have been on suggests that their squad is already capable of competing at the top end of the Championship, it does feel as though they could do to add to their options in January, in case they are faced with any significant injury problems in the second half of the campaign.

The fact that discussions are being held about signings is encouraging, and it will show that everyone at the club is aiming for that same target of promotion this season if that is backed up with investment in January.

It will be interesting therefore, to see just who Rovers are able to bring to the club in January with the funds they appear to be expected to receive.
