Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson says the club will revisit the possibility of signing Newcastle United winger Rolando Aarons in the January transfer window.

The Terriers saw a deadline day deal for Aarons collapse last week, with The Daily Mail reporting the paperwork required to complete the deal was sent through just two minutes after the deadline.

However, it seems that the prospect of a move to The John Smith's Stadium for Aarons is not completely off the table just yet.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live about the possibility of making a fresh move to bring Aarons to the club when the transfer window reopens in January, Hodgkinson said: "I think we want to make sure we’re signing the right players that make us better and we believed that Rolando would do that.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t get it done and that’s life and it happens."

Indeed, it seems Hodgkinson and Huddersfield would rather bide their time for Aarons than explore the free agent market, with the Terriers chairman going on to add: "We still are confident that he’s the right player, so rather than bringing someone in at the last minute or bringing in someone else…

“He’s our top target, he remains so, and what we’d rather do is get through the next 10 weeks to January and get it done then rather than bring in somebody that maybe doesn’t tick all the boxes Rolando did.”

A graduate of Newcastle's academy, Aarons has 27 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, scoring four goals since breaking into their first-team in 2014, also spending several spells out on loan at other clubs including Sheffield Wednesday, Wycombe and Motherwell.

As things stand, there are less than 12 months remaining on Aarons' contract with Newcastle meaning he could be free to leave the club for nothing at the end of this season.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

It could be argued that it will be something of a risk for Huddersfield to wait for Aarons until January, given they failed to replace Karlan Grant, and have so many games to come before then, when injuries and suspensions could also impact on their current squad.

Even so, their decision to stick with their pursuit of Aarons could convince the winger to join the Terriers - who clearly want him - even if interest emerges from other clubs, and you feel Newcastle would be happy with this deal at the turn of the year, since that is their last chance to receive a fee for him.
