Charlton head of recruitment Steve Gallen has revealed the club remain keen on signing Adam Matthews, although he stressed they have another option available to them if the Welshman can't agree terms.

The right-back, who is available on a free after leaving Sunderland in the summer, has been training with the Addicks as he looks for a new club. It's an area of the pitch that Lee Bowyer will want to strengthen after Anfernee Dijksteel left for Middlesbrough.

And, Gallen told the South London Press that talks are ongoing with Matthew's representatives but that an alternative is in the pipeline if the former Celtic man doesn't sign a deal.

"We are speaking to Adam Matthews’ agent about doing something. There is nothing concrete yet but I think we can get some common ground between us. If we do that [deal] then that will be our last signing.

"There are a few free transfers about and there is one other right-back [option], which is not Tyrone Mears."

Adedeji Oshilaja has been used at right-back on occasions this season but he was forced off in the first-half of the recent win against Brentford due to injury.

The Verdict

This would be a very good signing for Charlton because they need an additional option in that position and Matthews boasts a lot of experience and has proven he can play at this level.

As well as that, he is still only 27-years-old, so he could still have a lot to offer if he remains fit in the years to come.

Gallen's comments suggest there is still a bit of negotiating to do to ensure all parties are happy and Bowyer will be hoping this can get wrapped up over the international break.
