Charlton Athletic’s new chairman Matt Southall has met up with his Peterborough United counterpart Darragh MacAnthony as the former’s long-awaited tenure at The Valley gets underway.
MacAnthony, who is notoriously open with fans of all clubs on Twitter, shared a photograph with the EFL’s latest chairman on the social media site, and was incredibly complementary of the Charlton man.
Writing alongside the selfie, the Irishman said: “Look who is buying me that coffee @CAFCofficial fans @MattSouthall84 great to spend time with another ‘younger’ chairman in game. @EFL needs more of them 😀👌🏻”.
QUIZ: Can you remember Charlton’s last 15 January deals?
East Street Investments’ takeover of the Addicks was finally approved by the EFL last week after weeks of checks, ending the reign of the much-maligned Roland Duchatelet, and allowing Southall to assume his new role as club chairman.
The picture will have also sparked plenty of activity in the minds of Charlton fans as well, especially with the January transfer window now open again.
Back in the summer, the South Londoners had a substantial bid for Peterborough marksman Ivan Toney rejected late in the day, and this picture will do nothing to slow down rumours of a return bid being made.
If I were a Charlton fan I would be very encouraged – and not for transfer-related reasons either.
MacAnthony has shown throughout his time at the Posh that he is a very sensible owner but one who remains intent on producing a great product for his fans; a blend of ambition and pragmatism.
There is therefore nobody better for Southall to pick the brains of than MacAnthony and Charlton fans should be hopeful that a few of the Irishman’s traits will rub off on their new boss.
