Charlton Athletic are set for an interesting summer ahead, as they prepare for another season in the third tier of English football.

The Addicks finished seventh in the League One standings this term, and will be eager to win promotion back into the Championship at the second time of asking.

A number of players are out of contract this summer with the Addicks, with the club still holding talks with some over new deals heading into the 2021/22 campaign.

Chuks Aneke is one of those to be linked with a move elsewhere ahead of the new season, although Charlton are believed to have offered him a new contract.

Speaking in a recent interview with South London Press (quotes sourced from London News Online), Charlton boss Nigel Adkins revealed that all of the club's out of contract players wanted to remain at The Valley.

"We released three [players] and the others I wanted to stay at the football club. They and their agents are in negotiation with Steve Gallen, who is representing our football club in those negotiations and our budget.

"All the players who are out of contract have a right to see what else is out there. They have all said to me they want to stay, which is a big thing.

"But the business side of it has got to be done in terms of concluding their contracts. All I can do is tell them I want them to stay – that they have got a place to be if they want to be here."

The Verdict:

It's going to be an interesting few weeks ahead, that's for sure.

Charlton have got some key players out of contract at the end of this month, with Aneke being one of those that the club are trying to negotiate a new deal with at the moment.

Adkins' comments sound promising, and he'll be hoping that he can build a squad capable of making a serious push for promotion back into the Championship this season.

If he can keep his key players at The Valley this summer, then I'd back him to guide them back into the second tier of English football this term.
