Bristol City assistant manager Dean Holden has given an update on the fitness of midfielder Korey Smith, report The Bristol Post.

Smith has been missing for the entirety of the current season but is closing in on a return to full fitness after a lengthy lay-off and Holden says he has been impressed with his attitude and recovery.

"He’s had a great couple of weeks," he told his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

"It’s a great story for Korey. He had a terrible time with his injuries but he’s on his way back now.

"Seeing him out there smiling and moaning and refereeing decisions in training is a great sight. It really is.

"He’s still got work to do with his fitness but a 70-minute and 90-minute run out after the time he’s out injured is a great return."

Smith made the move to Ashton Gate from Oldham Athletic back in 2014 and has gone on to become a fan favourite since, racking up 174 appearances in that time.

Following the international break, Bristol City face a tough clash with Nottingham Forest in what could prove a crucial showdown in the race for the play-offs and promotion.

The Robins currently sit in sixth place after 16 games and will be looking to continue their push up the table over the next weeks leading up to the January transfer window.

The verdict

This will be a big boost to Bristol City, to have Korey back on the pitch and around the matchday squad.

Is he better than what Johnson currently has at his disposal in midfield? It is debateable. The Robins arguably have one of the best midfield units in the division.

But his infectious character and leadership credentials may well prove crucial in the dressing room as Johnson and co continue to push for promotion to the Premier League.
