Barnsley are reportedly demanding compensation from Scottish side Hearts, if they are to appoint Daniel Stendel as their new manager.

The Daily Mail claim that Stendel is still on the payroll at Barnsley, despite being sacked in October after a poor run of results with the Tykes.

But the German is seemingly targeting a swift return to football management, and is set to sign a deal with the Scottish side in the near future.

Barnsley's chief executive Paul Conway revealed to Sportmail that Stendel is still under contract with them at Oakwell, and is in a confident mood that Barnsley will win their case, even if Hearts contest the issue.

"We still have a valid contract with Daniel Stendel until the end of the season. There is already a tampering issue with us concerning his existing contract."

"Hearts have our letter and we have notified them and, if they want to hire Daniel, that's fine, that's their choice. But they either pay us now or we will file a claim against them. And if any club wants to fight it, we will win."

The Tykes are currently sat bottom of the Championship table, but picked up a much-needed three points on Saturday, in what was only their second win of the season.

Barnsley are next in action when they take on Cardiff City in what could be a tricky test for Struber and his young team at the weekend.

The Verdict:

What a bizarre situation this is heading into the festive period.

Barnsley find themselves right in the middle of a relegation scrap in a time that could define which direction their season heads in as we approach the New Year.

You would imagine that if Stendel is still on their payroll, then they're entitled to some sort of compensation from Hearts if they appoint him as their new manager.

I think he'll do a good job there, and will be keen to impress once again in management after success with the Tykes last season.
