Aston Villa saw their automatic promotion hopes end on Saturday after a disappointing performance in a 3-1 defeat to Norwich City.

Wolves had beaten second placed Cardiff on Friday night, a result that seemed to open the door for a late challenge from Fulham and Villa for the other automatic spot.

However, whilst Fulham continued their magnificent form, Villa faltered and failed to win for the fourth time in five games at Carrow Road.

That prompted Tony Xia to send a message to the fans through his twitter account today.

The Villa chairman acknowledged the unhappiness of the fans but called for the fans to show support as there is still a lot to play for, calling for the side to ‘get it going again’.

Despite their worrying slump in form, the West Midlands side should have very few issues about cementing a top six place, with Steve Bruce’s men eight points ahead of Millwall in seventh place.

Yet, Bruce will be echoing his chairman’s comments and demanding a strong end to the campaign so Villa go into the play-offs in form.

The Verdict

Saturday was hugely frustrating from Aston Villa’s perspective as they’d been handed a big opportunity thanks to Wolves but couldn’t take it.

Fans will be glad to see Xia’s comment as it recognises the situation whilst also realising they have a lot to play for.

Ultimately though, it’s all about promotion for Villa and it has been since August. The play-offs are now the only realistic way that will happen and they have to prepare for what will be massive games for the club.
