Kevin Phillips urges Sunderland to secure fresh agreement with current player

Kevin Phillips insists that Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke deserves to be offered a new deal at the Stadium of Light.

Wyke has been in excellent form for Sunderland this season, helping Lee Johnson’s side fight for a top-six finish in Sky Bet League One.

The 28-year-old has scored 17 goals in 25 league outings this term, scoring 21 in 32 games across all competitions.

Five goals in his last three games have helped Sunderland climb up to sixth in League One, with the Black Cats recording back-to-back wins at the weekend.

Wyke is out of contract at the end of this season, though, leaving Wyke open to discuss personal terms with another club on a potential pre-contract deal.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has urged the club to offer Wyke a new deal.

He said: “I think he deserves a contract extension.

“He has been their main man this season. The big worry right now is that if he gets injured, who is going to score the goals to maintain their promotion push?

“He deserves a new deal. His record speaks for itself this season. Regardless of whether they go up or not I expect the club to offer him a new deal.

“I would keep him and bring in some more players to compete with him. If they go up, why would you not keep him? He is a handful. He gives Sunderland a different kind of dimension.”

Wyke has scored 32 goals in 92 games for Sunderland since arriving from Bradford City in 2018.

The Verdict

It is really surprising that Wyke hasn’t been offered a new deal yet considering the form he has been in and how important he is.

He’s scored 17 goals in League One this season, and it’s been a surprise to see that a club haven’t really been linked with his signature, even in January.

If he continues his form in front of goal and Sunderland don’t go up this season, then he may feel that he can make the step up to the Championship and potentially leave on a free transfer.
