Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds United to sign a striker in January that can score 10 or 15 goals in the second half of the season.

The Whites are second in the Championship after beating QPR 2-0 at Elland Road on the weekend.

Tyler Roberts scored the opener in his first league start of the season, while Jack Harrison sealed the victory with a second goal late on.

With Eddie Nketiah out injured, Patrick Bamford started upfront for the 15th time this season but was unable to find the net–meaning he still hasn't scored since August.

Prior to the game, the Whites were the lowest scoring side in the top six and had managed just five goals in their last seven matches.

Despite the win against QPR, Phillips urged the Yorkshire club to look to the transfer market when the window opens at the turn of the year.

Speaking on EFL on Quest, he was asked whether he felt it was vital they added striker in January.

Phillips replied: "For me personally, yes.

"Leeds fell short last year. If they want to go that one step further this year and they can get to January still near the top of the league–go and splash some money on a striker that will get you those goals from January to the end of the season to get you promoted.

"They've got players who are chipping in from midfield but now you want that striker to get you another 10 or 15 from Christmas onwards."

Bamford's next chance to break end his scoring drought looks set to come against Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road next Saturday.

The Verdict

Strikers that can score 10+ goals after Christmas are not easy to come by and it would be a big call for Leeds if they took Phillips' advice and splashed the cash to get one.

Phillips was promoted from the second tier of English football five times as a player and scored 78 Championship goals–so he does know what he's talking about.

Given their business in the summer, which saw them sell three first-team players and make the majority of their additions from the loan market, I struggle to see them making a big-money move in January.

Bamford seems to be doing everything right apart from finding the back of the net, it is going to be interesting to see what happens come January if his struggles continue and Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah hasn't proved the solution.
