Former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips believes the club should be doing all they can to sign Bournemouth's Josh King.

The Baggies have had a tough start to life back in the Premier League, having collected just one point from their opening four games, and the need for reinforcements has been obvious.

Boss Slaven Bilic is particularly desperate for a new number nine and Karlan Grant is thought to be the main target.

However, Albion were credited with an interest in King last week and Phillips told West Brom News that Albion need to do everything they can to land the 28-year-old given the quality he possesses.

"Do I think they could bring both players in? I think one of them is a priority. I wouldn’t be too concerned about bringing both in but I would put all my eggs in one basket and go for Joshua King."

Bringing in the Cherries forward seems unlikely for Albion before Friday's deadline. Firstly, it has been suggested that his wages will be a major issue for the club and there is plenty of other interest in the player.

The verdict

If they could pull it off, there won't be many Albion fans who disagree with what Phillips has said here - King would be a magnificent signing.

He has proven himself at the top level over the years and would clearly be an upgrade on what the Baggies have right now in their squad.

Unfortunately for them, a transfer seems highly unlikely and a more realistic alternative appears to be Grant, who would also be a smart signing.
