Aston Villa face a nervous wait to see if two key players will be fit enough to face Millwall on Saturday.

Midfielder Mile Jedinak is struggling to be fit in time for the crunch match against Neil Harris’ side with a hamstring injury.

Jedinak announced his retirement from international football with Australia in midweek and will now be fully focused on life with Aston Villa, who will be managed by youth manager Kevin MacDonald.

Jedinak has been utilised as a makeshift centre back for the majority of this season and his potential absence could leave the temporary Villa boss with limited defensive options.

The Australian was ruled out of Villa’s thrilling 3-3 draw at home to Aston Villa, and after captain James Chester’s dismissal in the draw, it leaves interim manager MacDonald short of defensive options.

Keinan Davis is another player in a race against time to be injury free for Saturday’s game, as he is currently nursing a hip injury.

Davis is yet to make an appearance for Villa this season and hasn’t been in the matchday squad whilst Steve Bruce was in charge. But since Bruce’s dismissal, Davis may fancy his chances of a recall to the squad, should he recover from his hip injury.

Having made 17 starts last season, whilst first choice striker Jonathan Kodjia was absent, Davis netted twice for the Championship side.

Verdict:

With Aston Villa’s notable absentees already in defence for this game, it is vital that Jedinak is fit for this game as they could struggle without the Australian. He has already made nine appearances this season and provides the squad with much needed experience.

With fellow defender James Bree only making two appearances this season, questions will be raised about the former Barnsley man’s ability to step up into the starting XI.

Villa fans are always keen to see academy products prove to be a success at the club and Davis will be hoping to do just that. Although Jonathan Kodjia is likely to start for their game on Saturday after already scoring four goals this season, Davis will be hoping to get some much-needed match fitness from the substitutes bench.
