Portsmouth left-back Brandon Haunstrup has just reached 50 appearances for his boyhood club, having made his debut five years ago now for Pompey.

The defender has been made to play second fiddle across the past half a decade, however Kenny Jackett deciding to use the 23-year-old in a different position may just be bringing the best out of the defender.

Haunstrup hasn't realised his potential yet having not even made 100 senior appearances in first-team football, and with his peak form approaching, he will be determined to reach his potential soon and really push on to be a regular squad member at Fratton Park.

The 23-year-old has played less than two games at right-back for Pompey, but he has been able to add a threat down the right-hand side of the pitch that no other full-back has been able to do this season.

His two assists in the 4-1 win over Southend United before netting his first Pompey goal on his 50th appearance against Harrogate Town has really shown the ability that the defender has, and just what he can add to the side as he will be looking to maintain his spot.

The Portsmouth youth graduate has been given an opportunity to express himself in a position that is largely unfamiliar to him, however he is increasing his versatility and positional awareness as he continues to grow in stature.

Being able to play at right-back and increase the options that Kenny Jackett has there while Ross McCrorie is out injured will surely be a welcome boost to the Pompey boss as they look to climb up the table and push for the play-off places despite a slow start.

Jackett is right to be using Haunstrup on the other side of defence as it can sometimes throw attackers off by taking on a left-footed player at right-back, while the defender cutting inside onto his left foot and going for goal means that he can give Portsmouth that added threat.

The young defender has all the natural attributes to play as a full-back, with his strength in the tackling, his energy and his ability going forward marking him out as one of the best backup full-backs in League One.

Jackett has clearly seen something in the defender that he liked and decided to use him as a right-back, with Haunstrup having repaid his faith so far and put in some excellent displays in his new position.
