Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett has stated the he intends to keep utilising Brandon Haunstrup as the side's first-choice right back, despite Ross McCrorie's return to full fitness.

The 23-year-old has been used as cover in the position in recent weeks after on-loan Rangers defender McCrorie suffered a hamstring injury against Southend at the beginning of October.

McCrorie did return for Portsmouth in their midweek win against Northampton Town in the Leasing.com trophy, but started the game as a central defensive midfielder as opposed to a right-back.

Originally a left-back, Haunstrup has performed well on the other side of the defence since slotting into the role, which will reward him with a likely start this Saturday against Peterborough United at Fratton Park, ahead of McCrorie and James Bolton.

Speaking to the Portsmouth News, Kenny Jackett has praised Haunstrup's contribution to the side so far from that position.

"If you are looking at goals and assists, he has contributed very well, particularly against sides which don't play with wide men, in a 3-5-2 or a diamond, with a lot of space – and he has exploited it," Jackett said.

Haunstrup has made fourteen appearances this season for Pompey in all competitions, scoring once and providing three assists. Two of them came against Southend in November.

Portsmouth take on 3rd placed Peterbrough United this Saturday, hoping to move up into the play-off places with a win over Darren Ferguson's side.

The Verdict

Haunstrup has performed well in the right-back role for Pompey, with Kenny Jackett rewarding the 23-year-old for his endeavour.

Ross McCrorie and James Bolton will have to take their chances and perform well in training to claim back the starting spot. It will not be easy if Haunstrup continues to be consistent for Pompey.
