Kenny Jackett has revealed he won't be as reliant on the loan market this season after his experiences with Andre Green and Ben Thompson last time out, as reported by the Portsmouth News.

He enjoyed the benefits of both players, as well as David Wheeler last season, but despite them signing one-year loan deals he saw them all recalled in January.

They all had recall options in their deals, something which has influenced his transfer activity this season. Defender Sean Raggett has joined from Norwich City and there isn't an option for him to be called back to his parent club.

That's directly influenced by last season's experience, as he revealed

"It was not a situation I wanted to get caught in again because it made it difficult in January to replace those players," Jackett said.

"With Wheeler, he wanted to go, it was about game time really. In the case of Green, I think if the manager hadn’t changed they wouldn’t have called him back during the second half of the season."

"As for Ben Thompson, he would have been in the running for player of the season had he stayed. Ben was a tough one (to take), he went back to Millwall and did very well there, got himself a new contract."

Portsmouth enjoyed a wonderful start to the 2018/19 season, storming to the top of the table and seemingly on course for promotion to the Championship. A woeful spell after the festive period saw them fall into the play-off places, where they ultimately finished, losing their semi-final against Sunderland.

They did lift the EFL Trophy at Wembley against the same opposition in April, giving them some positives to take from the season.

The Verdict

It's a wise move to ensure no recall in place. The loan market has changed significantly in recent years, but it has to be of more benefit to the club taking the player in.

In the case of Thompson, he was on the fringes at Millwall but did extremely well for Pompey. It's hardly fair that as soon as he thrives this parent club call him back and reap the rewards; not when the initial deal is for a year.

Pompey entered the arrangement understanding they had the player all season, but as soon as they started seeing benefits he was snatched away.

That won't be the case with Raggett. I would imagine a number of Football league clubs are taking the same precautions after being burned last season.
